Tuned Up and Thriving!

Ron Russell Middle School’s Orchestra Program

A DDEF instrument tuner Grant for the Ron Russell Middle School Orchestra Program was awarded in spring 2025.

DDEF wondered why they needed more tuners when an earlier grant had been awarded. We learned that after Covid, the Orchestra program had grown from 60 students, reaching 167 students this year! Orchestra supplies needed to grow as well. In order for these students to be successful, home practice and tuning their instrument daily is essential.

Tammy Culp, Orchestra Director at Ron Russell Middle School explained:

“Without this grant, I would not have been able to ensure that every student in my orchestra class has access to their own music tuner, to tune their instrument every day in class. Tuning is such an essential part of learning to play a string instrument.  It not only helps students develop their ear but also allows us to begin class efficiently and spend more time making music together. Because tuners are quite expensive, having a full set available for my students has made an incredible difference in both the quality of sound and the students’ confidence.”

“… The tuners made a huge difference in helping students tune independently so we sound in tune.”

“… From the bottom of my heart. THANK YOU for investing in our students, our program, and the power of music education … I absolutely love teaching in the David Douglas School District and am so grateful for the continued support from DDEF. THANK YOU!!!!”
