DD Grant Recipient - Thanks For My New Experiences

The Richard Cole Fund’s goal is to build a student’s self-esteem and broaden opportunities that the student might otherwise not be able to experience. It also strives to keep students in school and engaged in their education.

One grant recipient recently sent his thanks.  He describes his experience at a 1-week summer camp designed to help campers grow and expand their social experiences, foster independence, and support positive mental health by taking pride in their strengths and to have fun in a camp setting where they can build friendships, practice social skills, gain independence, learn self-reliance and a sense of belonging.

We are happy to relate this 8th grader’s experience made possible through the Richard Cole Fund.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to attend camp. This was my first time being away from home for that long, and I’m really glad I went.

Some of my favorite things about camp were being outside in nature, swimming in the pool, and making Minecraft-style tools and weapons. I also enjoyed being around the other campers and the camp staff. Everyone was kind and helped me feel comfortable while I was there.

One thing that was difficult for me at first was finding out there wasn’t Wi-Fi. The information before camp said we could bring gaming equipment, so I expected I would be able to use mine online. I was disappointed when I got there, but I was able to adjust and get through the week without it. It might be helpful for future campers if the packing information lets them know ahead of time that there is no Wi-Fi, especially for kids who do better when they know what to expect before going somewhere new.

Something really cool came out of not having Wi-Fi, though. Camp got me more interested in Dungeons & Dragons. I didn’t actually play it while I was there, but I learned more about it and realized it seemed like something I would enjoy. My new school has a Dungeons & Dragons club, and now I’m interested in trying it as a new hobby.

Going to camp also showed me that I can be away from home and do things that are new or uncomfortable for me. I did better than I expected, and I think other kids should have the opportunity to go to camp too because it can help them try new things, become more independent, and discover new interests.

I really appreciate the school staff who helped make it possible for me to attend camp and the camp staff who helped me through the week with kindness.”

“Thank you for giving me this experience.”
